The Top 5 Wearable Tech Smart Coats Designed For All Seasons

I know that with summer looming, the last thing that you are thinking about is purchasing a new coat, but hear me out.

Coats are no longer just a coat. The good news is that the advancement of technology has given birth to the wearable jacket, a coat that you can control. Imagine wearing a beautiful cashmere coat designed to be worn either on a chilly evening or a wintery night.

Take it from me, a woman who owns a tech coat, it has been the perfect wardrobe staple, especially if you live in a city like London, where you can easily suffer 3 seasons in a day. It is also the best travel companion if you are the kind of person who in one moment is in Dubai and the next is in Iceland. Here are our top 5 wearable tech coats that have been designed for all seasons.

1. The Emel + Aris Cashmere Coat

Have you been introduced to luxury brand EMEL + ARIS yet? Founded by Rana Nakhal Solset, the British label has been hitting headlines for their beautifully tailored Smart Coats designed for both men and women.

Created to be a collection of stylish wearable tech, the coats introduce a revolutionary heating technology that uses a lightweight, inert polymer instead of wires and produces FIR (far infrared) heat energy that is absorbed by the skin to heat the muscles and increase blood flow. The benefits of Far Infrared (FIR) therapy have long been recognised and recent research has validated the vast range of medical claims of FIR, including increased blood flow, pain relief and boosted the immune system.

2. Hillary Day’s Innovative and Breathable Coat

It was back in 2008 when Hillary Day first debuted her line of classic but innovative outerwear styles. Designed to last, her combined our need for an everyday practical coat with our aesthetic desire to look stylish.

Made from c_change™ by Swiss company Schoeller, a name synonymous for innovation and technology,  the coat has a two-layer construction—a fabric on the outside, attached to an air and moisture permeable laminate that is wind and waterproof on the inside. This breathable, stretchy, stain resistant fabric is also highly adaptable to temperature. c_change™ has the ability to “open” and breathe as the outside temperature heats up or if you heat up, meaning you stay comfortable. Similarly, as the temperature drops, the membrane “closes,” trapping in body heat but not moisture, to keep you dry and warm. Amazingly, at 68 degrees the fabric is twice as breathable than it is at 50 degrees.

3. Ralph Lauren Parka and Bomber Jacket

OK, you can’t buy this one (yet), but as the most talked about in the fashion technology coat so far this year, I do believe that it will not be long before it becomes available to us mere mortals.

Designed for Team USA and officially part of the team’s Winter Olympic uniform, the jackets have been created using a heat-conducting ink that generates warmth, kind of like an electric blanket. Instead of wires or coils sewn into the fabric, the heat comes through a special type of carbon and silver ink bonded to the jacket lining. The ink conducts heat in the same way a wire would and connects to a small battery pack sewn into the garment. When fully charged, the jacket itself stores up to 11 hours of heating time.

4. Moon Berlin, The Fashion Tech Atelier

Moon Berlin was the first fashion tech brand to come up with the heated cashmere coat. What made them unique was that the inside of the coat housed a groundbreaking battery-powered heating panel that was capable of heating you up within 60 seconds.

The beautifully designed, high quality, soft cashmere coat was hailed as successfully merging fashion with technology. The integrated electrical heating system attached to the lining cannot be taken out, but why would you want to? The panel is thin, flexible and lightweight that you would hardly know that it is there.

5. The Smart Wear Company

On 9th May 2018, The Smart Wear Company announced the launch of its new Smart Jackets on Kickstarter. Designed to include the latest in heat generation and management technologies, the startup has created a collection that has successfully mixed fashion with technology to create a unique gadget that will help you feel warm no matter the temperature conditions.

Founded by entrepreneur Alejandro Peghin,  together with his I+D team have developed a whole range of elements that allow us to convert our fashion jackets into authentic pieces of technology. They have achieved this thanks to a small battery inside, a heat generating device, and textile perspiration technology. The unique gadget will not only keep you warm it can also charge your phone. With a battery that remains up to 4h at maximum temperature, and between 10-12 at a minimum, and due to their innovative system, there is no risk of burning. At the same time, their pads are resistible and washable.
