Is DvF’s Flirtation With Tech All Over?

This season it seems that the likes of Minkoff and Posen are showing Diane von Furstenburg how fabulous tech can really be on the runway.

With the DvF SS16 show having just been shown at NYFW, I must admit, my face is wearing the look of disappointment. The thing, is I was looking forward to seeing a tech inspired collection strutting down the catwalk from a designer, who has for the past few months, been openly happily flirting with fashion technology.

In her own words, Diane von Furstenberg stated at an earlier press conference that, “Wearable technology won’t even be a word anymore, because everything you do will have technology”. It was these words that led to the goosebumps that I had whilst I waited to see how the diva of fashion was going to infuse technology into her SS16 collection. As the show begun, I watched the models with interest, to see if I could spot some tech as they walked down the runway. Trying not to be distracted by the pretty and colourful collection, I soon realised that tech at DvF this season wasn’t to be.

DvF’s SS16 collection, all vivid colours and bold prints, was quite fitting in all respects but I wanted more than the black and gold on offer. Even the sightings of the striking Karlie Kloss who opened the show with a red hot high-waisted skirt that accompanied a V-neck quarter length top with ruffled sleeves and social media darling Kendall Jenner who looked amazing in a jumpsuit, did not warm the cockles, I simply wanted more.

Although I was disappointed, backstage the models and the crew where happy. DVF put on spread of endless hotplates of healthy comfort food New York style Kale with garlic, chilli and caramalised onion being a highlight.

Now back to the show. This was upbeat collection was inspired by Diane’s first Studio 54 outing and the glamorous 1950’s. It was an inspiration that was noticeable in the models 70’s shimmering blue/green lids and Bridgette Bardot hair accented with bright floral accessories. Putting the missing tech aside, the collection itself was beautiful and had an air of the French Riviera. Feminine, floral and unafraid of colour it was a collection that bragged looser shapes and flowing skirts mixed in with DvF’s signature look. With Charlies Angels hair, the models gently floated onto the runway one final time, as the show closed to “Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weeknd.

I will put my hands up and say it was an eye catching collection, but I did expect a tech appearance. I really wanted DvF to give us more than just the flower power that was on show. I wanted to see the future of fashion strutting down the runway. The hope I had, had been fed by her words,“Technology is the biggest revolution. It’s such a big part of our lives, we do everything with technology, so it’s not even separate anymore. It just is”  and to that, I now say, Diane when it comes to FashionTech please do not tease us. We prefer more action and less words.
