Have You Met Fashion’s Spinoff of Google’s VR?

Muchaneta Kapfunde | @FashNerdEditor

The name Rebecca Minkoff has not been uttered in the same breath as Fashion Technology for a while, until now that is!

Rebecca Minkoff has brought to market a new product. This time the brand is all about their new fashion meets technology product, their cardboard VR (Virtual Reality) headsets. Before you can use them, you will need to assemble them first and once you have achieved this, the VR product works by placing your smart phone into the box which will allow you to watch a stream VR content, such as the 360degree view of the Rebecca Minkoff AW15 runway which was filmed by a VR camera.

This is not Rebecca Minkoff’s first dabble with technology, it all began with a collaboration with Case-Mate, which was then followed by their partnership with eBay and now they are introducing us to their very own VR product. This latest offering, is another pioneering way for the label to engage with its customer whilst still upholding their reputation for merging fashion with technology.

Priced at an affordable $24, they have already sold out online. Rebecca Minkoff’s latest venture is not only proving popular but it seems to have been a sellout success as soon as it launched. I guess we all saw that coming, right?

  • That runway show wasn’t virtual reality at all, it was just recorded with a 3D video camera. VR is entirely the wrong terminology. The Google Cardboard standard opens up the possibilities of VR, but the Rebecca Minkhoff team hasn’t really tapped it yet. I think what is the more interesting cousin, AR, Augmented Reality is really the future. AR is where things are going to get really interesting.
