What was your first business idea and what did you do with it?
My first business idea was making jewelry when I was a student at Uni. I sold them to friends but as the orders came through, I quickly realized that the cost and time in making the jewelry didn’t make it a very viable business. It took me hours in designing and creating it as well as buying the pieces. I had to exit the “business” and concentrate on my studies.
What do you wish you knew before you started your business?
That you can’t do everything yourself.
What did you learn from the worst boss you ever had?
Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. First year working as a lawyer for a boss who loved to yell and scream and throw you in the deep end.
Who do you admire most?
My parents. They escaped Vietnam after the war in 1977 and took 4 children under the age of 6 on a boat with other families. They didn’t know where they were headed or how long it would take to get there. We ended up in Australia, all alive and my parents ran a successful small business in Australia for 30 years.
What did you learn from your biggest failure?
The only thing that comes from failure are the lessons to be learned. Failure is a blessing in disguise because it gives you the opportunity to reflect.
How do you find inspiration?
Traveling, being creative and meeting people and hearing their stories
What was the best piece of advice you ever got? The worst?
Best – Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way.
Worst – none!
What’s your favourite quote?
If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
What do you think is the most innovation of your lifetime thus far?
The smart phone and the internet. It has enabled me to connect with my friends and family and do business from all over the world despite our distances.
