Stratasys x Ganit Goldstein: Fusing Cutting-edge 3D Printing Technology With Traditional Design

Stratasys x Ganit Goldstein collaboration explores the melding of the traditional method with the latest 3D printing technology.

Pioneers of 3D Printing technology Stratasys have collaborated with Fashion Design Graduate, Ganit Goldstein to create a new line of unique 3D printed woven shoes. The partnership, which was part of Goldstein’s “Between the Layers” graduation collection, gave birth to three sets of shoes that were created using Stratasys multi-material 3D printing technology.

Exploring Intricate & Customised Designs With 3D Printing

Inspired by her experiences in Japan, Goldstein managed to fuse Stratasys cutting-edge 3D printing and scanning technologies with traditional design techniques. On working with Stratasys, Goldstein told WhichPLM: “Stratasys’ advanced 3D printing technology has opened up endless possibilities for my designs, enabling me to print any design at the voxel level in vibrant colours and a range of materials – all in a single print.”

“For aspiring designers, the ability to fuse cutting-edge technology with traditional crafts is very exciting.”

Produced on a Connex3 Color, Multi-material 3D Printer the woven shoes allowed Goldstein to design without boundaries and combine printing with traditional weaving techniques. “For aspiring designers, the ability to fuse cutting-edge technology with traditional crafts is very exciting, unlocking the freedom to design without limitations of past years,” she said.

Selected as a finalist of the ‘Arts of Fashion Foundation’ International Student Fashion Competition, Goldstein shared with WhichPLM: “With the knowledge, I’ve gained while working with Stratasys, I’ve come to realise that 3D printing is increasingly becoming an integral part of design thanks to the unique design freedom achievable.” Explaining: “For me, the key to good design is to first get an understanding of the traditional design methods and foundations, and then explore how I can enhance the essence of the traditional method with new technology. Not only does 3D printing accelerate the design process and enable reduced production costs, but it also affords designers total freedom of design.”

“With the knowledge, I’ve gained while working with Stratasys, I’ve come to realise that 3D printing is increasingly becoming an integral part of design.”

On the creation of the ultra-realistic shoes Naomi Kaempfer, Creative Director of Art, Design and Fashion at Stratasys stated: “We were very pleased to support Ganit with this project. The finished shoes are another inspiring testament to what can be achieved with 3D printing, as we’ve seen in the various art and fashion projects we’ve worked on with world-renowned designers, such as Neri Oxman and ThreeASFOUR. Using the latest version of Stratasys’ GrabCAD software, we were able to seamlessly combine transparent materials at the voxel level and map in a single VRML file.”

She continued: “We’re seeing a great deal of interest from the fashion industry regarding the immense opportunities for customisation that 3D printing is offering up. We urge designers to enjoy and take advantage of the possibilities afforded by the technology to create an avant-garde, personalised designs quickly, cost-effectively and without traditional design boundaries. As this is still a relatively new domain, we need to challenge ourselves to envision the next steps and to embrace this new design freedom to open up its true frontiers.”
